Peritoneal Dialysis Catheter
Peritoneal dialysis is an option for many patients with end renal disease. It is an alternative to traditional hemodialysis. Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD) is increasing in popularity as an alternative to hemodialysis for several reasons. CAPD has many advantages over hemodialysis including cost, simplicity, patient independence, and decreased dietary restrictions. Complications include peritonitis, catheter infection, and mechanical malfunction.
We laparoscopically place these catheters as well as revise catheters placed by other surgeons that have become nonfunctional. We have had great success in providing end stage renal disease patients with a better quality of life and freedom from hemodialysis.
